The state and counties began keeping official births, deaths and marriages in
1853. This continued until 1896 when it was discontinued due to a budget
crunch. They were paying pensions to the Civil War veterans. The statewide
records began again in 1912. Some localities did keep their own records in
the 1896-1912 period.
