You should check both Heritage Quest and Ancestry, I have found people indexed on one but not the other. Since I do free research for others on various genealogy groups I need both each gives something the other does not have. Genealofy.com is a waste of money.

Footnote.com when it has completed indexing NARA's and various other files will be one of the most useful genealogy sites. It too is a paid site but much cheaper than ancestry.com.
