Hello There!
I just received through our Inter-library loan system information from the
2nd Volume of FAMILY GRAVEYARDS IN HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA 2000 which was
compiled by Helen Kay Yates and W.E. Winfrey. On page 91 it refers to Laurel
Spring- Cross and mentions "the old slave cemetery" behind the old Cross
place on Cheraw Road near the old Ashcake station where there are some
unmarked graves.
I'm interested in researching the Cross people that were buried there and
would appreciate any assistance you can offer. Frank Lee Cross and Addie
(Adaline) Cross of Hanover/Henrico County were my great great grandparents
and were from Hanover County. Have you any sources that can further assist
me?
I'm also looking for Isaac D. Bird/Byrd/Burd and Rachel Bird/Byrd who lived
in Henry, Virginia or elsewhere in Hanover County. They were also another set
of great great grandparents.
There is another curious clip from page 91 that interests me: "Stories of the
stone markers, now gone, have been passed down in the family. A. B. Cross
remembers a mule sinking in the ground and being told by his grandfather that
that was the slave burying ground.
Might there be a way that you know of to contact the compilers of this book?
That might help me! Do you have the first volume? I'm interested in CROSS/
BYRD/BIRD/BURD ancestors of Hanover County!
Would very much appreciate your assistance!
All best!
