How can I find information on members of colonial militia who participated
in the French and Indian Wars (1754-63) including Braddock's expedition
(1755), Pontiac War (1763-1766), Battle of Bushy Run (Aug 5-6, 1763? I
believe these would be considered service for Britain and therefore not at NARA..

Nel,

If I remember right/don't hold me to this... there was a boundary dispute
between PA and VA in this area. There were certificates in right of
settlement given by the Commissioners for the Adjusting Titles to
Unpatented
Lands in the District of Monongahela, Yohogania & Ohio (maybe West Augusta
also).

I had the same thing on William Williams land on Buffalo creek in Ohio
County and it meant that he had claimed/squatted on x acres, built a
dwelling and was living on the land and then when it was surveyed (probably
needed due to an increasing encroaching population) he was granted
additional land surrounding, protecting and including his original
settlement.

This is from a Northern Neck Land Grant.

Zane, Jonathan.

15 May 1784.

Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Grants A-Z, 1-124,
reels
42-190; Virginia State Land Office. Grants 125- , reels 369-.

Location: Ohio County.

Description: 140 acres on the River Ohio and Wheeling Creek including his
settlement made in 1776.

What does "including his settlement made in 1776" mean?

Thanks!

The original material sounded to me as if the acreage included a
parcel of land already his by right of a decision, legal suit, legatee
of a will etc.

The explanation given of it as including land he previously settled on
makes sense if you read it as an archaic phrase.

Alice,

You should check "Hening's Statutes At Law". See address below. =20

http://vagenweb.org/hening/

Type "British land" in the "Search Engine" block and you will get a list =
of entries. The second one is the index page. =20

"2. Hening's Statutes at Large
land-warrants, felony without clergy 65: Lands of British subjects =
vested ... Grants for escheated lands, how obtained 68: How lands =
acquired for public ... his entailed lands 103: -- Vestry
vagenweb.org/hening/vol10-32.htm"

Page 623 of the index has the entry "Lands of British subjects vested in =
commonwealth, by escheat 67:" Click on the number "67" and it will lead =
you to the information. The information continues for a number of =
pages.

You might want to read the other information about "Kentucky", =
"Land-Bounty", "Land Office" and "Lands" that are listed in the index. =
You will find the answer to your question and a whole lot of more =
information.

Janice has hit upon my original thoughts on the meaning of "including =
his settlement" in this land grant.

"The original material sounded to me as if the acreage included a parcel =
of land already his by right of a decision, legal suit, legatee of a =

And if this "settled land" did indeed refer to an inheritance, that =
would have provided another avenue of research in the probate records =
for me.

I had done a full search of the LVA Northern Neck Grants and found loads =
of grants for the members of the Zane family but with only a few =
containing the "settlement" phrase.

But while it now appears to have a different meaning, thanks to so many =
of you, at the very least I now know the year each of them first settled =
on their land.

And as is often the case when presenting a question to this list, I =
picked up even more info I'd never heard before - tomahawk claims being =
one of them.

Always an informative discussion from this list - many thanks to all who =
joined in!
