"Genealogy without Documentation is Nothing" - Paul Drake

Hi All,

I'm looking to find a definition of "Coroner's sale", what was sold at these
sales and why. What was sold at these "sales" that couldn't as easily be
sold at "public auction." Below is a sample of one of these sales.

Augusta, Georgia
28 Nov 1820, p. 4

Coroner's Sale.
Will be Sold, On the first Tuesday in January next, in the town of
Waynesborough, in the county of Burke, one negro man named Frank & one
riding Gig, levied on as the property of James Brown, to satisfy an
execution in favor of John Davis, against Wilson Navy, James Brown and
Joseph Attaway - said property being sold on the first Tuesday in the last
month, but the terms of the sale not being complied with the above property
will be resold at the risk of the former purchaser, on the day, and at the
place above mentioned.
     Willard Roberts, Coroner.

Thanks!
Nel
