There is a splendid web resource, Virginia Runaways, that reprints 18th
century runaway advertisements from Virginia newspapers. Those who ran
away were slaves, indentured servants, and some deserters from the army.
In many instances the advertisement contained a physical description of
the person and what the person wore or might have been wearing. You can
search the advertisements by many categories, including, I think,
costume.

The URL is http://people.uvawise.edu/runaways/
