The Virginia Genealogical Society is pleased to announce their latest
publication, "Death Notices from Richmond, Virginia Newspapers, 1841-1853,"
vi+533 pp., Smythe sewn, every name and place name index, $35 ($28
members), with additional ordering information from the VGS web
publications page at <http://www.vgs.org/publications.htm>.

This volume continues the Society's series and includes notices through
1853 when state-wide registration of vital statistics began. Abstracts and
transcripts are taken from eleven newspapers printed in Richmond at some
time during the subject period, including daily, bi-weekly and tri-weekly
publications. Each notice if followed by a citation for the newspaper date
and page wherein the notice can be found. Surprisingly, coverage affects
much of the state, with much information from burned counties. Names of
houses or obscure places are often given, e.g. Cedar Grove, Clermont, Eagle
Point, Green's Boarding House, Gosport Navy Yard (Norfolk), Level Green,
Millwood, Mount Hope, Mount Jackson, Piping Tree, or Powell's Tavern. The
work is the result of many volunteers over two decades, and was ultimately
compiled and indexed by Wesley E. Pippenger.

Examples of the contents are:
"Died on Sun. evening [i.e. 4 JUL 1841], Miss Margaret N. PEMBERTON ...

age, son of Elliott Chiles of Chesterfield Co. [RDW and RE, 11 JUL 1851, p. 2]"
