I do not understand what you mean by "...the ends (both) smoothed."  Please explain.....  Do you mean there are no inscriptions ??

  Does anyone know if there is a significance to a pre Civil War tombstone with
  the ends (both) smoothed.  The bottom is obvious but what of the top?  No
  markings and some in the cemetery were smoothed on top and some were not?
