The county and city land tax returns and personal property tax returns for
Virginia survive in an almost complete run from 1782 into the 20th century.
They have all been microfilmed through 1850, and the returns from some
jurisdictions have been microfilmed through later dates than that. They are
at the Library of Virginia.

The tax books for the Virginia counties that in 1863 became West Virginia
counties were sent to West Virginia sometime about the 1890s.
