"Visitations" were lists compiled by Heralds, in which all homes of other than low class laborers were visited and family information - births and marriages, particularly - were noted, that data used as evidence to establish descent and keep land titles clean and beyond dispute. In addition to maintaining the integrity of land title, the lists likely had origins in heraldry and for all tax purposes.

Subject: Question "Exactly What are Visitation"?

I have found several references to certain visitations and it seems to be
lineages on back in England but exactly what were they? Why did they come
about? Have even found it in Landed Gentry.

Thanks In Advance for any help on this.

  Marlene
