I think the Smith's you are referring to are not connected to my Smiths. I
also have not proved the parent of my Edward Smith, Sr. who married Lettice
Green. I have proved Lettice Green's family.
Here are some notes I have on Edward Smith, Sr. and sources.
Notes: Ancestors and Descendants of Smiths by Cheek
In1700, Burr Harrison I, Stafford records included a request by Burr
Harrison to be appointed guardian to the children of Edward Smith, he having
married the widow who was now deceased. On Oct 1702 Burr Harrison as guardian
of William, Edward and Katherine Smith, children of Edward and Lettice
Smith, and grandchildren of Ann Scarlett of Stafford, and refer to the sale of
land to George Mason.

There is an immigration record for an Edward Smith.

Genealogy Quest
To add, Edward Smith, Jr. is proved through his marriage to Mary Bell and
his will. In that will he names Mary Bell, his wife, and the land she
inherited from her father Roger Bell. Mary was probably born about 1700 in King &
Queen co., because in the 1704 Quit Rent Roll in that county Roger Bell
had land there. She probably died about 1776.
Her husband Edward Smith was probably born 1693 Stafford County and died
Sept 23, 1756, Orange county. There children were: Thomas, Ambrose, John,
Isabelle and Elizabeth.
Here is the notes and information I have on Edward Smith.

Sept. 17, 1755
Edward Smith
Signed in presence of
ROGER BELL
JOHN BELL
The abstract of the will of Edward Smith mentions a possible argument over
who gets the land given by Roger Bell dec'd to his daughter Mary. So Edward
Smith m. Mary Bell, dau.of Roger Bell, Sr.. I suspect Roger Bell, Sr.
never lived in Orange Co., Va. and his will was probated in King & Queen Co.,
Va. He probably died years before Smith's will was written.Smith's will says
"land given his daughter Mary". That suggests to me that Mary wasn't
married yet when her father wrote the will.
This JOHN BELL who witnessed the will is probably the son of ROGER BELL.
Marrowcoca Creek in Edward Smith's will was probably Maracosic. It runs from
northwest of Bowling Green (county seat of Caroline) to the southeast until
it runs into the Mattaponi River. Maracosia Creek is now part of the
current boundary between Caroline and K & Q, although more of the Creek was
located in King & Queen in 1735.
Drysdale Parish was in the western part od K & Q.
At a court held for Orange Co. on the 23rd day of Sept.1756.
This will was presented into court by Mary Smith & Ambrose Smith Exors.
therein named & proved by oaths of ROGER BELL & JOHN BELL, witnesses thereto
& ordered to be recorded. On the motion of these Exors. who made oath
according to Law Certificate was granted therefore obtaining Letters of Probate
in due form giving security on which they with ROGER BELL & Charles Smith
their securities entered into and acknowledged their bond according to law.

Janice,
There was an Edward Smith who was a witness on the 1723 Will of the Thomas
Smith who apparently married Anne Gregory. I believe that was in
Lancaster/Middlesex Co., VA, but I would have to check my notes to be sure
(could have been Gloucester Co., VA). There was also an Edward Smith who
was a witness on the 1727 Will of a John Smith of Middlesex Co., VA. That
John Smith was a son of an older John Smith (who died in the 1660s, as I
recall) who was married to a Maragret Unknown. That John Smith was a
neighbor of "my" Alexander Smith (my maternal line; Alexander Smith died
around 1696 in Middlesex Co., VA), but we have no proof as to whether or
not
those two neighboring Smith families were "blood related" to one
another....though those two neighboring Smith families eventually
intermarried.
Note: Alexander Smith and his unknown wife (though some claim that she was
a
Miss Cock/Cocke) had a son who was also named John Smith. That son was
typically "styled" as Lt. John Smith, and he married the widow Mrs. Jane
(Cock/Cocke) Jones. His neighbor who was also named John Smith (i.e., the
son of John and Margaret (Unknown) Smith) was typically "styled" as
Captain
John Smith....and he was the above John Smith who left his Will in 1727
(which was witnessed by an Edward Smith).
While John and Margaret (Unknown) Smith had another son who was named
Thomas Smith (who married Ann Petty), the Thomas Smith mentioned above who
married Anne Gregory was apparently a son of a different (and PROBABLY
unrelated) John Smith who married Elizabeth Berry....and there is little
to
suggest that this John Smith/Elizabeth Berry family was related to the
Middlesex Co., VA neighbors Alexander Smith and the John Smith who was
married to a Margaret Unknown (but no proof). Do you have any idea if the
above witnesses on those two Wills were the SAME Edward Smith, or was that
more likely two different Edward Smiths? Was at least one of those
witnesses "your" Edward Smith who married Lettice Green, or is that not
likely?
I see from some posts on GenForum that some researchers have shown that
"your" Edward Smith was a son of a Joseph Smith who left his Will in Essex
Co., VA in the 1720s, as I recall. Do you agree with that? If I remember
correctly, that Will showed that "your" Edward Smith had a brother who was
yet another John Smith. Some have also claimed that "my" Alexander Smith,
who was in Lancaster/Middlesex Co., VA by at least the 1650s, was also a
son
of a Joseph Smith, but I have never found any strong evidence to support
that.
Comments on any of the above?
Thanks, Bill
