Starting in mid-1853, all VA counties were required to report deaths of
slaves along with deaths of non-slaves. In general, death records are good
until the Civil War, spotty to downright missing for the war years, and
then good again until 1896, as another reader mentioned. It would not
surprise me if some slave deaths went unreported, however.
