General Robert E. Lee himself had to sign an "amnesty oath" in Rockbridge 
Co., VA, where he had moved after the war to become president of Washington 
College.  I have a copy, and one of my family members named Charles A. 
Davidson (who also fought for the Confederacy....as did several of his 
brothers) was the notary public who co-signed that document.
