I can only say that every time I've seen this designation, it meant the
profession of the person - I knew that person was a miller from various
other sources. I'm curious why you ask - have you found somebody designated
as "miller" that you think was not the operator of a mill?

As you probably know, Sr. and Jr. could mean uncle & nephew or simply older
and younger men with the same name, not even necessarily related -
unfortunately. My favorites are when they designate John Smith by where he
lives - as in "John Smith (Back Creek)" and "John Smith (Low Ground)".
That's immensely helpful when untangling folks!
