UPDATE on RELIC After Dark

            The Sixth Annual RELIC After Dark is scheduled for Saturday,
September 25, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Bull Run Regional Library.  Along
with an evening of dining and research opportunities, we can look
forward to another nationally known speaker.  Drew Smith, author of
"Social Networking for Genealogists," is now our scheduled speaker.  He
is co-host of "The Genealogy Guys" podcast along with fellow genealogist
George Morgan.  Mr. Smith is an IT Librarian at the University of South
Florida in Tampa.   Reservations are now being accepted for this gala
event.  The cost which includes food and beverages, and printing from
the library's electronic resources, is $25 (paid in advance, cash or
check).  Contact RELIC for further information.

RELIC PROGRAMS

Here are our latest offerings.  Funding for RELIC programs is provided
by the Friends of Central and Bull Run Libraries.  Sign language
interpretation is available for Prince William Public Library programs

RESEARCHING YOUR VIRGINIA ANCESTORS

Presented by Don Wilson

Genealogy in Virginia has its own complexities.  Records may be lost,
destroyed or difficult to locate.  Don Wilson, Virginiana librarian for
Prince William County, has been studying Virginia resources and research
techniques for over thirty years.  He will present a talk "Researching
Your Virginia Ancestors," on Thursday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Bull Run
Regional Library's community room.  The program will be repeated on
Tuesday, July  27, at 7 p.m.  In his talk, Mr. Wilson will attempt to
give practical advice and step-by-step instructions for finding and
documenting elusive Virginia ancestors.

WRITING AND PUBLISHING A FAMILY HISTORY

Presented by Linda Hammill Matthews

Linda Matthews of Evanston, Illinois, has prepared a detailed and
readable book about her ancestors, the Hammill family of Occoquan,
Virginia, titled "Middling Folk: Three Seas, Three Centuries, One
Scots-Irish Family."   She will present a talk about the writing and
publishing of this history, on Thursday, July 29, beginning at 7 p.m.,
at Bull Run Regional Library's community room.

The author has traced the Hammill family back to Scotland and Northern
Ireland in the 1600s, using a wide variety of evidence.  The immigrant
to America arrived in southern Maryland by 1726, and the family moved to
Prince William County by 1778.  The book includes a report on activities
here during the Civil War and the family's later migration to the west
coast.  The book has been professionally edited, including a number of
maps and photographs, and was published by Chicago Review Press this
year.

DISCOVERING MANASSAS HISTORY

Presented by Rita G. Koman

Manassas author Rita G. Koman is a retired history teacher.  She has
taught generations of local students the fundamentals of good research
techniques and the value of original sources.  Her talents were put to
use in the preparation of her new book Manassas Mosaic: Creating a
Community, published by the Manassas Museum.  

Ms. Koman, a member of the Manassas Historic Resources Board, will
present a talk on Thursday, August 12, at 11 a.m., on "Discovering
Manassas History."   She will describe her experiences working on the
book and some of the interesting stories and documents she uncovered
while compiling it.   The history of this area goes back at least 300
years, and concerns much more than the famous battles that are most
often remembered.

HISTORY IN 3-D

Presented by Roxana Adams

Learning about history can begin with a single artifact.  Roxana Adams,
curator of the Manassas Museum, will show how to understand the larger
picture of an era by studying individual objects from that time.  Her
program, "History in 3-D," will give the audience an opportunity to see
some interesting relics and learn about their use and significance.   It
will be presented on Tuesday, August 24, at 7 p.m. at the Bull Run
Regional Library.
