I seem to remember that some time back this question came up, and was
answered, but I was not sensitive to the discussion at the time. A 1661
letter by Philip Ludwell to Rappahannock authorities ordering them to give 25
Matchcoats to the Mattaponi Indians, apparently in recompense for certain
trespasses of the English on Mattaponi land, and 6 Matchcoats in addition to
the Mattaponi King has now come within my zone of interest. What were the
matchcoats and what was their relative value?
