I am just wondering why the current retention schedule says to retain 3 years after termination then destroy, but the regulations put out by Homeland Security are quite specific with how long the employer is required to keep the form - 3 years after hire or 1 year after termination, whichever is later. Granted, 3 years after termination is longer than what's set by the government, but why aren't the retention periods the same?
