We just wanted to let everyone know that my staff and I have been in
contact with the VA Beach Sheriff's department and have spoken to the
agency RO, the officer in charge of the project and Sheriff Lanteigne
himself. Ben Smith, manager of the State Record Center, has also spoken
with the Sheriff's office. The Sheriff and his staff are very much
aware of the new regulations regarding the destruction of records
containing social security numbers. The officer in charge of the
project has told me that no shredding is currently being done, but
rather the project is still in the planning stages.
Also, a quick note about Ginny's comment below. The new regulations are
not contained in the Public Records Act, but rather in the Virginia
Administrative Code.

One other thought on this issue. The new revision to the Public Records
Act (17VAC15-120-30) sets specific requirements for the type of shredder
to use and "contractors doing the shredding must be bonded." Inmates
under the authority of the Sheriff's Dept. may or may not be considered
a "contractor" for the rest of the City.
