Topic: Cybersecurity: Protecting Yourself Online

If you read or view the news at all, you will know that breaches and hacks are the order of the day. As the saying goes, if you haven’t been hacked, just wait, you will be. What can we do to protect our data, computers, and identities? Many reasonable, relatively easy, and free options are available to help you and your family avoid loss by hacking. In just under an hour you can learn the best practices to enjoy life on the Internet.

Speaker: Karen McDowell, University of Virginia

Karen McDowell, an information security analyst at the University of Virginia, has worked in information technology for more than 15 years. In the interests of helping end-users learn how to keep their data, identity, and electronic devices safe, Karen began speaking and writing about security issues and routinely teaches end-users how to identify and avoid social engineering and other types of attacks. Karen continues to research security issues and presents state-of-the-art information to the media, individuals, and groups. She has given presentations at numerous professional conferences and community meetings, and has published articles and blogs on information security. Karen holds a Ph.D. from UVa, and has earned MCP, GSEC, and GCIH certifications, and is currently studying computer forensics. She is an active member of Richmond VA InfraGard and the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni, Richmond VA Division.
