Good Morning,

The name is not ringing a bell. With its' name being Kaufman, it may date to early-mid 1800s onward. If the family is German and/or Jewish, this area didn't start seeing those ethnic groups until very late 1700s.

There was no listing in Conway Whittle Sams' "Index to Map of Norfolk and Princess Anne Counties" (1919). It is the closest thing to a gazetteer for this area.

The area prior to 1959 was part of Princess Anne County so there may be plats at the Virginia Beach courthouse that shows the area.

We have an 1881 coastal survey/topographical map of the area and there is no mention of the bay. https://cdm15987.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p15987coll7/id/55/rec/34

You can check the coastal survey maps at NOAA. https://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/

USGS has digitized a lot of their topographical maps as well here: https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/#4/40.01/-100.06

What is the source for this name?

Sincerely,

Troy

Subject: [VA-HIST] Kaufman Bay?

*** This is an EXTERNAL email. Please exercise caution. *** ________________________________

I got a query asking about the location of Kaufman Bay, near Little Creek Amphibious Base. A Google search didn't turn up anything. Does anyone on the list have a clue?
