For a discussion of this issue see _The Friendly Virginians: America's First
Quakers_ by Jay Worrall, Jr. I do not have a copy in front of me, but if my
memory serves me right, he specifically discusses the imposition of laws in
Virginia forbidding the teaching of slaves and the Quaker response to them.
This was one of the major areas of effort as an active effort by Quakers as
was the whole issue of public education in a more general sense.
