Point of information. Regarding the UVA statement, the Charlottesville Daily
Progress carried a quote referring to students owning slaves.  In fact, from
the start UVA students were forbidden to bring slaves on Grounds or to house
them off-Grounds. This was written into the first rules.  Faculty, the
University itself, and the "hotels" that provided dining services did own
and hire slaves.  Gayle Schulman has written an excellent paper on slavery
at the University, which is somewhere on the UVA website I think. You can
also google her name.
