Greetings:

I publish a genealogical newsletter and also conduct research in original records for case studies for an online project, "Narratives in Black and White", which features endnotes; My BA is in History and so I'm trained in Chicago style which is the standard citation style used by historical writers and academics. APA is usually used in the Humanities. As a professional genealogist with training in historical research, I use Chicago in all my citations, but sometimes, will expand the citation to make it clearer. This is acceptable and even advised to do so in Chicago Manual of Style (CMS). Some genealogists use Mill's "Evidence!" style in their genealogy work, but I find it's redundant and unnecessary if one is already trained in a citation style appropriate to his field of study. Hope that helps.

Kind regards,

Alex Colvin,

Subject: Documentation

During my undergraduate work in math & grad work in math ed & distance ed, I used APA documentation style. I am an amature historian & genealogist.
I'm attempting to document a family research that was submitted many years ago to the Nelson Co, VA, Historical Society. Should APA style be used or do historical researchers use another style. Much of the research was well done, in my opinion, but lacked a good bibliography.

Thanks in advance for the recommendations. And btw, it's great to be back on this listserv again! Haven’t been here since the late 90's early 2000's.
If you remember me send an email to [log in to unmask] & say, "Hey". I received so much assistance in those early days! Thank you.

Good Morning Lonny,

Most historians use either Chicago Manual Style or Turabian style. While going through ODU's History Graduate program, we used Turabian. I did a brief check of major historical scholarly journals and nearly all use Chicago style.

The main thing is to pick a style and be consistent.

Sincerely,

Troy

You may want to send this information to Virginia high schools. Students interested in history could use this as a service project. Also, lineage societies do service projects as well. I'm thinking DAR chapters, USD 1812 Chapter's, etc. It's a great Veteran's project for any organization.

Many academic/university presses and academic journals seem to prefer the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style (https://research.wou.edu/c.php?g=551307&p=3785205), as did the editors of the few blogs I've posted. Middle and high school, undergraduate and graduate schools usually prefer Turabian’s A Manual For Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. I think both of these sources are available online.

In addition to /Chicago /you might want to consult Elizabeth Shown Mills' /Evidence Explained/ and her website https://www.evidenceexplained.com/content/about-author

as she deals with many of the resources used by genealogists that are not dealt with to any great extent by Chicago. Turabian is not used by today's genealogical community.
