Those interested in Virginia's musical legacy might find the following
announcement of interest.
 
In tribute to the Library of Virginia exhibition "Virginia Roots Music"
(July 2002-March 2003) and the critically acclaimed CD reissue "Virginia
Roots-the 1929 Richmond Session," the Carpenter Center and the Library
of Virginia are co-sponsoring:
 
Virginia Roots Music: The Concert
Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts
600 E. Grace St.
Richmond, Virginia
Saturday November 8th, 7 p.m.
 
Please join us as we pay tribute to the musicians of the 1929 Richmond
Session with performances by modern masters of Virginia old-time, blues,
gospel and jazz music.  Our featured musicians (several of whom
performed previously at the Library) are as follows:

Highlights of the Library's Virginia Roots Music exhibition will be on
display from Nov.3 through Dec. 11, 2003 at the Carpenter Center.

In addition, several FREE events are associated with the concert:
 
Teachers' Workshop, Wednesday, November 5, 2003, 4:00-7:00 p.m.
Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts. 
 
This workshop is based on the Library's highly successful event held in
2002 and will present a wide variety of Virginia and American music from
the 1920s and 1930s. Participants will receive new insights into these
seminal musical styles and a large packet of materials for the
classroom.  Diane Covington Greer, Music Instructional Specialist, Arts
and Humanities Center, Richmond Public Schools, and yours truly will be
the main presenters.  Participants will receive dinner and two ticket to
the Nov. 8 Virginia Roots Music concert.  For more information on the

Instrument Workshops, Saturday, November 8, 2003, noon-4:30 p.m.
Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts . 
 
Legendary Virginia blues performer John Cephas demonstrates the unique
East Coast Piedmont style of guitar and discusses the history and social
context of this house-party music. Participants should bring an
instrument.  Maximum registration: 20.
 
Four old-time musicians from Virginia-Mark Campbell, Speedy Tolliver,
Jim Costa, and Jim Lloyd-hold a fiddle and banjo workshop.  The
presenters will demonstrate a variety of traditional banjo and fiddle
styles and teach two songs to participants. Participants should bring an
instrument.  Maximum registration: 20 for each instrument (40 total).
