Participants will receive new insights into these seminal musical styles and a large packet of materials for the classroom. Legendary Virginia blues performer John Cephas demonstrates the unique East Coast Piedmont style of guitar and discusses the history and social context of this house-party music. Participants should bring an instrument. Maximum registration: 20. Four old-time musicians from Virginia-Mark Campbell, Speedy Tolliver, Jim Costa, and Jim Lloyd-hold a fiddle and banjo workshop. The presenters will demonstrate a variety of traditional banjo and fiddle styles and teach two songs to participants. Participants should bring an instrument.
