So many Virginians shop at the outlets there now, that they know the
correct pronunciation. The pronunciation was deliberately set at Redding

I don't know why you think that the pronunciation of Reading has been
changed. The town in Berkshire, England is pronounced Red-ing, and so far
as I am aware always has been.
