Sorry if someone else has already posted this- quite fascinating, I
hope they can preserve it. It amazes me that there are so many of the
very early colonial sites still being found in Virginia. Glad they
found it before the developers did. A month or two ago, the
Fredericksburg Freelance Star had an article about an old mine site
being found in Stafford County, I think it was. They are pretty sure
it was the same mine being mined by the natives, and that John Smith
visited. It was inside a little rocky cave entrance on a wooded
hillside, it showed signs of having been worked later, but in some
areas and on the ceiling, the workings were with shells and native
technology. Of course, housing developments are going up in the area,
but they didn't reveal the exact location, in hopes of somehow
protecting it.
