My experience in researching in the 1790s is that there was no such
authoritative paper as the old Williamsburg Virginia Gazette during the
late colonial and Revolutionary period. Even if there had been, the
surviving issues of most of the papers published during the 1790s are
scattered and incomplete, making research in that period surprisingly
and annoyingly difficult.

Subject: [VA-HIST] Newspaper of Record for Virginia in the 1790s

Gentle people--

To my embarrassment, I was unable to answer this question from a
colleague:

What was the newspaper of record for Virginia in the 1790s?

Many thanks,
