In the old days, we used to say "I sound like a broken record", but since the demise of the phonograph record, I don't know what is in vogue--- a cracked CD? Well, whatever, its me again.

The mission of a library or archive is three-fold, as I see it. Preserve, Share and Celebrate whatever it is that the instituion treasures. Given the obsession with microfilm by the Library of Virginia, and such things as this message illustrates, I would say that the LOV mixture of the above is 90-6-4. Failure to come to grips with the digital world will doom the LOV to a second-rate institution. While having done no survey, I have a feeling that the Educational Institutions of Virginia are doing a better job, but I just don't know.

I think it is fodder for a study, or maybe a Master's thesis, on the evolution and direction of historical Virginia information available online.

Unfortunately, one can only access JSTOR if one is physically present inside the Library of Virginia building. The annual licensing cost to offer access to the database remotely is far beyond what the Library's budget can afford. If the cost ever comes down, we would love to be able to offer this and other databases remotely to LVA card holders, but given the current economic environment, it's unlikely that we'll be able to do this anytime soon.

Can one with an LVA library card access JSTOR through the LVA web
site from a home computer? If so, how does one do this?
