Thanks to some of you good folks out there, I have found a home for my music library at the University of Virginia Band. When I turn things over to them, I would like to say something dramatic, and if not that at least intelligent, about Thomas Jefferson and music at Monticello.
I understand that he wrote somebody that he wanted to establish a band at Monticello -- two oboes, two clarinets, two natural horns, two bassoons -- which was the classic wind/military band of the early 19th century. I expect that the US Marine Band by that time had upgraded from fifes and drums to this, and I have a query into them.
But I would appreciate it if any of you Jefferson Scholars can pin down that letter for me so that I can reference it.
Thanks in advance.
