Per the 1800 Census, Norfolk was the most populous city with 6296
people, followed by Richmond with 5737. As soon as Richmond was
designated the capital, Williamsburg had been consigned to village
status, technically if not officially. I'm not sure what the population
of Alexandria was at this point, but remember that it was part of the
District of Columbia until reverting to Virginia in the 1840s.

Subject: [VA-HIST] largest city in 1800

Which was the largest city in Virginia in the late 18th C./early 19th
C.? (I'm thinking it was Alexandria, but a colleague thinks it was
Williamsburg). Or are we both wrong?!
