Per the 1800 Census, Norfolk was the most populous city with 6296 people, followed by Richmond with 5737. As soon as Richmond was designated the capital, Williamsburg had been consigned to village status, technically if not officially. I'm not sure what the population of Alexandria was at this point, but remember that it was part of the District of Columbia until reverting to Virginia in the 1840s. (I'm thinking it was Alexandria, but a colleague thinks it was Williamsburg). Or are we both wrong?!
