There was a lot of trade that didn't involve slaves. Many ships  
sailed the triangle, down to the Caribbean to unload a cargo from  
England and take on rum, take the rum up to the colonies, where it  
was the favored drink, sell it and take on a load of whatever the  
colony was selling, usually hogsheads of tobacco. Then back across  
the Atlantic, hopefully before the winter storms set in. My own  
ancestor came on such a ship, he was an indentured servant.
