Dear colleagues:

Annette Gordon-Reed's biography of the Hemings family, The Hemingses
of Monticello: An American Family, has won the National Book Award for
non-fiction. (Peter Matthiessen's novel Shadow Country, one volume of
a trilogy, won the award for fiction.)

To see news reports on the award, go to http://news.google.com/ and
type "National Book Award" in the search box.
