I was surprised to find that the Eastern Shore of Maryland was one of
the main routes between Virginia and Philadelphia. GW took it several
times. Travelers would go to Annapolis on horseback, then get on a
ferry (with or without their horses) which would cross the Chesapeake
Bay to the little port of Rock Hall (now a leisure-boat port). From
there they would ride the short distance to Chestertown, where they
could stay at an inn or private home. Then, on to Wilmington and
Philadelphia, up the Delmarva peninsula.
