If our emphasis is on colonization, conquest, and state formation, then
tracing a line from the Jamestown settlement and its English founders
through independence to the US today makes sense. If, instead, our
emphasis is on *people* whose descendants are still among us, why not at
least recognize those who were "here" (anywhere in the lower 48 or all 50
states) first?
