When mapping out your summer reading, consider Ellen Glasgow. Strictly
speaking she didn't write historical fiction, but Glasgow managed to
capture life in Virginia from the 1860s to the 1940s. Although many of
her novels are set in Richmond (which she fictionalized as
Queensborough), some are set in the Valley and Petersburg. My own
particular favorites are The Builders, Sheltered Life, and Virginia.
