Richard A. Rutyna (1937-2018), associate professor emeritus of history at
Old Dominion University (1963-1992), died on March 13. Dick was a
specialist in the colonial and early national periods of American history.
In addition to courses in his specialty he also developed and taught a
survey of American cultural history and participated in the creation of a
self-paced American history survey course. Among Dick’s publications was *The
History of Freemasonry in Virginia* (1998) with co-author Peter
Stewart, *Virginia
in the American Revolution: A Collections of Essays *also co-authored with
Dr. Stewart (1977); *Old Dominion University: Heritage and Horizons *(1987)
with Dr. John W. Kuehl. A student of Virginia’s religious history, Dick
also lectured and published an essay on the Virginia Statute for Religious
Freedom. Dick was Second District chairman of the Democratic Party during
the 1970s. In later years he served as president of the Lake Taylor Civic
League in Norfolk.
