The conventional number I've seen in various places is right about 5,000.

I can't speak to the methodology that produced that number, however--so while I have seen people whom I believe to be responsible use that number, I don't know the original scholarship in which it was first derived.

My guess is that there are others here more qualified than I am to assess the reliability of this figure.
