The origin of serpentine walls (Sinusoidal walls) actually goes back at least to ancient Egypt. The Dutch almost certainly introduced the design to England by 1600 where they are often called crinkle crankle walls. They are especially prevalent in East Anglia which had a great deal of Dutch influence in the building trades. Jefferson almost certainly learned of the concept of Sinusoidal walls though the English building and landscape manuals of the second half of the eighteenth century.
