B. Lewis Blackford was a Confederate surveyor during the Civil War and a
talented artist. He sketched what he saw as he traveled around Virginia and
North Carolina. This week’s Out of the Box blog entry is about a notebook he
kept during the war which is now part of the Library of Virginia's Private
Papers Collection. An earlier notebook kept by Blackford was captured by
Union soldiers and published in full by a New York newspaper according to his
