The place of enlistment might be a good county to search the death records
in as well. Since he was born in Fredericksburg you might also want to check
the Hodge indexes to the Fredericksburg newspapers. Was there a widow and
perhaps a pension?

He was in the 25th Virginia Infantry Battalion.  There is an alphabetical
roster of all Confederate soldiers.  I checked his service record on
microfilm here at The Library of Virginia (it is a National Archives
publication), but it didn't note anything about him dying in battle at
Petersburg.  There is a page, however, that notes his birthplace (Caroline
County), age at enlistment, physical description, place of enlistment, etc.

Thanks for those suggestions.  I don't know his regiment or his home county.
The only record I have found is the note in the Claims Commission filing
that he served for the Confederacy and died at Petersburg.  Is their a
source of the rosters of all regiments from Virginia?
