As a U.Va. alumnus, I'd like to add that similar cuts have befallen history
departments at the Commonwealth's state colleges and universities.  U.Va.'s
has had to suspend several faculty searches.  Of course, other programs in
Charlottesville and elsewhere are affected in a similar fashion.  This is a
calamity all the way around.
