It may have something to do with a fireplace.  See this 18th century
inventory for someone in Hertford, England.  The inventory is divided by
location (the dairy, the kitchen, etc.), and the shilliards are in the
hall, in a group with one pair of (fire) dogs (aka andirons), a brass
fender, a pothook, and a pair of bellows.
