Thanks Carl, yes I have been there and used them many times, but the ability
to search and view online is much faster than filling out paperwork for each
case, viewing filling out more forms, viewing, etc. I'm sure you get what I
mean.

Anyway thanks for the update.

Regards,

Steve

Steve,

Thanks for the question and your interest in the Albemarle chancery records.
As you may be aware the Albemarle chancery records have already been
processed and indexed (and have been available to researchers for many
years) - the index is on the Chancery Records Index and the original records
are available for viewing at the LVA.
Because they were processed and indexed many years ago they do not meet our
current processing and indexing standards and will need to be entirely
reworked before they can be scanned. This is, of course, a matter of having
an experienced staff member rework the collection to meet those new
processing specs. Though rework of then Albemarle collection is in our
plans, I cannot provide a timeline for completion for the rework or
scanning. For the time being, researchers will have to visit LVA to consult
those records.
The overall priority of how the chancery records get scanned depends on a
number of factors not the least of which are budgets, strict timelines
associated with federal scanning grants, and staff time. Hope this helps.

Carl

When is Albemarle going to get done? Probably one of the most sought after
counties and how is the priority set?

Regards,

Steve

The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce that Prince George County
chancery causes, 1809-1917, are now available online through the Chancery
Records Index. They are an excellent resource for African American and
women's history as well as local, state, social, and legal research! For
more information on the colleciton, see today's post on Out of the Box.
