Mr. Williams,

You can find information in the Virginia Land Patents. Nansemond County
was formed as Upper Norfolk County in 1637 and early court records are
in the earliest Norfolk County Court records. Those early records have
been abstracted by Alice Granbery Walter in her book "Lower Norfolk
County, Virginia Court Records: Book "A" 1637-1646 and Book "B"
1646-1651/2".

Nansemond County citizens continue to do business in Isle of Wight
County, and Norfolk County and the surrounding counties. Some of them,
like Richard Exum, bought land in Old Rappahannock County. Peter
Montague moved from Nansemond to that area also.

The old counties in North Carolina, just below the state line have
records of Nansemond County families.

The Virginia Journals of the House of Burgesses begin in 1619 and have
lots of information about Nansemond County. These books have been
published. Another published book "The Minutes of the Council and
General Court of colonial Virginia" edited by H. R. McIlwaine, should
have information about Nansemond County residents.

I hope this information is helpful.

Louise Jones

Subject: [VA-ROOTS] Nansemond county

I have been unable to obtain early (1610-1650) information on Nansemond
County due to natural catastrophies:: burned courthouse, records lost
....as well as political reasons e.g. absorption of the county into
other civil-political entities. Any help out there with court, chancery
or county data? Thanks in advance. George Williams
