Another good idea is to join local genealogy & historical society groups in the area you are researching. Sometimes they have great membership benefits. Check your local library typically they have Heritage Quest and it is free to library patrons. Ancestry.com has a great getting started activity. Find out if your local area has a Family History Center, typically near or at an LDS Church. The NGS has online courses for members as well. I have taken some, also taken some of the home study courses.

I would be very interested in it as I am from Pennsylvania and get to Virginia
about once every 2/3 years.

That is certainly an intriguing idea that could be explored. The current
class is aimed at learning to use the Library in person.

Would it be possible to offer classes thru distance learning?

In January 2010 the Library cosponsored a beginning genealogy class through
the University of Richmond's Osher Institute. I'm pretty sure we will be doing
that again in the fall. I'll post to the list when our plans are finalized.

New to genealogy. Does the Library of Va. offer a class or individual tour on
how to use their facilities for purpose of genealogy research?
