A witness to a 1849 will signed his name Jacob Smil Sir.

The last paragraph of the will written by an official restated the
witnesses' names, writing Jacob Smil Sir's name as Jacob Smelser.

Does anyone have enough experience with old German names to tell me why
Jacob's surname was signed in two parts, one being Sir?
