My ancestor John French signed his name in documents he created early on in
his life but he used an X or mark on his will.  He was at an advanced age.
Palsey or feebleness perhaps.  But this was not uncommon to see.  During this
time period  some could read and do sums but could not write. It took fine
motor skills to write and not all mastered it.
