Elizabeth jumped into a thread last week and posted the following link:
http://eagle.vsla.edu/vhi/
I didn't have a clue about what the original post was about, but, I decided
to check out the link. Typed in Fluvanna as my keyword (my favorite
Virginia county). Got 461 hits.
I thought I knew what the WPA was/did. Works Progress Administration,
right? They put some people to work during the Depression. Didn't they dig
ditches and fix stuff?
Oh what I found! It seems that the WPA, in 1936/1937 paid a lady named
Susie V. Shepherd and another person (I didn't copy that name, but will go
back and get it) to visit everyone in the county. They recorded bibles.
They recorded family stories. They recorded houses, standing and gone.
They recorded sterling silver, inherited, and received as wedding presents.
They recorded antiques. And they typed up what they found. And they took
pictures. And all the stuff they recorded is at LVA. And, LVA has put it
all on line!
Thank you, Elizabeth and LVA - you continue to amaze and delight me!
